NUM Artist Residency Series

Margins of Sound Society is proud to launch the MOSS Artist Residency Series with Calgary-based electroacoustic duo NUM.

Formed in northern Iran by Milad Bagheri and Maryam Sirvan, and now based in Calgary, NUM creates immersive electroacoustic performances that blend processed voice, field recordings, intricate rhythms, and generative electronics into richly layered sonic environments. Their work explores the creative tension between human expression and machine processes, resulting in performances that are both deeply atmospheric and technically innovative.

Their latest performance, Voices, Machines, and the Catastrophe, responds to the accelerating rhythms and uncertainties of contemporary life through a dynamic live system built in Ableton Live and Max/MSP. Human voice, improvisation, and custom real-time audio processes merge into an evolving sonic landscape where composition and spontaneity continuously reshape one another.

Join NUM for an evening that begins with an artist workshop exploring the ideas and technology behind their performance practice. Participants will be introduced to generative music, hybrid live performance systems, and the creative possibilities of human–machine interaction through demonstrations and discussion, followed by an intimate live performance.

While this event is offered to the community for free, please RSVP via our ticket link to reserve your seat. Donations are welcome and help MOSS deliver more public programming on mid Vancouver Island.

The Victoria performance features an opening set by Piu, an experimental vocalist whose practice draws from the expressive traditions of Indian raga while embracing contemporary electronic sound. Blending voice, improvisation, and experimental electronics, Piu’s work explores the space where ancient musical traditions meet modern sonic exploration, making her an ideal complement to NUM’s immersive electroacoustic performance.

Multi-award winning, Juno-nominated artist, Ruby Singh presents Bladed Edge Between, A live multimedia performance of poetry, sound and projections. Rooted in diasporic memory, ecological resonance, and intergenerational healing, the performance unfolds as a sonic archive of longing and belonging. 

The immersive experience is based on Singh’s poetry collection and is structured through the emotional arc of Indian classical music ascending, descending, breaking open and dissolving into silence.

DRIFT: Spring Sessions is part of our new Listening Series — small gatherings focused on attentive listening, immersive sound, and a calm shared atmosphere.

Guests are welcome to settle in, relax, and experience the music however they like.

Tea and light vegetarian snacks will be provided with ticket.

MOSS launches the Listening Series with an evening of listening-focused ambient music.

PhaseBloom presents slowly evolving ambient soundscapes that move between meditative stillness and darker atmospheric textures, joined by guest musician Samantha Letourneau on flute.

The evening continues with Piu, whose performance traverses ambient territories, blending atmospheric layers, vocal compositions, and gentle rhythmic movement to shape an immersive sonic environment.
