Margins of Sound Society supports independent and local artists across BC by fostering grassroots music and arts events that prioritize creative freedom, community connection, and fair compensation.

We strive to empower artists and audiences to engage deeply with music and sound as communal and transformative forces.

We welcome diverse voices, encourage the open sharing of knowledge, and create spaces where artistic integrity is preserved.

About MOSS

Our goals

Empower artists

We seek artists working at the edges of culture and sound, and give them access to the tools, opportunities, and community they need to grow. From emerging voices to established experimenters, MOSS exists to amplify creativity that might otherwise go unheard.

Engage audiences

By fostering openness and curiosity, MOSS helps audiences discover new sounds, perspectives, and ways of listening. Through concerts, workshops, and shared learning, we create opportunities for people to deepen their understanding of music and its possibilities.

Create spaces

We build welcoming spaces—on stage, in community, and in imagination—where art can thrive. MOSS is committed to cultivating environments that resist exclusion, encourage experimentation, and celebrate the beauty blossoming in the margins.

MOSS was founded on Vancouver Island, a place that itself exists on the margins — geographically, culturally, and artistically. Our name reflects both our location and our ethos: we champion the sounds, voices, and artistic practices that emerge at the edges.

We aim to create welcoming, exploratory spaces where artists and audiences come together through music. Rooted in electronic sounds but open to diverse traditions, MOSS events encourage collaboration, genre-bending performance, and the discovery of new ideas. Our gatherings are meant to feel intimate yet ambitious — experimental but approachable, rooted in community yet open to visitors.

By building bridges between the Island and the mainland, between genres and practices, and between artists and audiences, MOSS fosters exchange and shared experience. We are especially committed to mentorship and hands-on learning, offering workshops for youth and adults that reduce barriers and spark new creative pathways.

In many communities in B.C., there is an abundance of artistry but a gap in event programming and curation opportunities. MOSS exists to help fill that space, cultivating the margins as fertile ground for connection, creativity, and transformation.
